EDGE INTENSIVE: Pushing Dancers to Find New Limits

Our intensives are designed with the serious dancer in mind, incorporating many styles of dance + tons of guest instructors. Each day will push dancers to continue their education, dive into new experiences in different styles of dance, and give them the opportunity to work with our in-house instructors as well as numerous guests in the industry. (Two sessions based on dancers individual experience.)

KATE HARPOOTLIAN
Kate Harpootlian is a sometimes working dancer, professional auditioner, budding choreographer and improvisational comedienne extraordinaire. She was a raised a Southerner training at the Columbia City Jazz Dance Company under the direction of Dale Lam. Having traveled the world with CCJC, Kate graduated early from high school and took her dancing dreams to the great city of New York. She now sort of resides in Los Angeles and New York and kind of her suitcase. Her sometimes work credits include Carrie Underwood’s “Something in the Water,” Dancing with the Stars, Merce Cunningham’s Inlets II, Boardwalk Empire, Ellen, SYTYCD Season 12, Billy Bell’s Lunge Dance Collective, works by Jason Parsons, works by Heather Lang, Oui Danse, and Shaping Sound Dance Company.

In 2016, she was runner-up at the Capezio Ace Awards with her piece "Diginity." The following year she premiered "Better Late Than Never" at 25Live in Long Beach. She currently enjoys working and choreographing with young students across the country, hoping to the inspire them with her nerdy love of body alignment, theatrical contemporary movement, and self deprecating stories of advice such as “what you shouldn’t do in auditions that I have done.” A constant student at heart she has been exploring the journey from dancer to creator for some time and is most certainly excited to show what has come of it.

KENICHI KASAMATSU
Kenichi Kasamatsu is a working dancer, teacher and choreographer in New York City. As a dancer, Kenichi has worked with some of the most renowned choreographers from the nation like Keone and Mari, Nappytabs, and Kyle Hanagami just to name a few. As a result, he has been on stage and in video shoots with artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Ne-Yo, Daddy Yankee, and Mark Ronson. Kenichi teaches regularly at Peridance Capezio Center and Broadway Dance Center but also travels within and out of the nation to teach at various conventions and workshops including Intrigue Dance Intensive. Kenichi continues to share his craft and artistry through his classes as well as with his dance unit, aKompany.

HOLLY RYDER
Holly Ryder is a South Florida based teacher, focusing mainly on contemporary movement and improvisation. Since becoming certified in Vinyasa, she has developed a class that emphasizes body awareness and transitions from yoga based warm-ups to full improvisational movement and phrasework. Her students have been featured on “World of Dance,” “America’s Got Talent,” and “So You Think You Can Dance the Next Generation.” She is a faculty member of Intrigue Dance Convention, Tribe Dance Convention, and Impact Dance Convention based in Mexico. Holly’s formal training began in Georgia under the mentor ship of Shannon Childers and Cherrise Wakeham, and continued at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where she attended as a dance major with a focus on composition. It was there that she started to be recognized for her unique choreographic voice. Her work has been showcased on stages such as The National College Dance Festival and Raw Artists. In addition to teaching all over the United States, Holly has spent time teaching in Costa Rica, Mexico, and Canada. She feels lucky to be able to spread her love for movement exploration to dancers both regionally and nationally.

EMILY GREENWELL
Emily Greenwell is a New York City based dancer, teacher, and choreographer. She currently teaches as permanent faculty at both Broadway Dance Center and PeriDance Capezio Center. She directs a project based dance company - CLOUDE.NYC. She recently continued her education in movement by becoming a Certified Yoga Instructor. Emily was selected as a finalist at The Capezio A.C.E. Awards for Choreographic Excellence. Additionally, she was hired as a choreographer for DanceOn’s Every Single Step produced by Brian Freidman and Nigel Lythygoe. Emily can be seen performing as a featured dancer in Marian Hill’s music video “Want You” directed by Ian Eastwood. Other credits include dancing for rock group Phish and performing in the production of Aida at The Muny theater, both choreographed by Jon Rua. She was also a dancer in Oz the Musical under the direction of Todrick Hall. Emily has been lucky enough to travel the world to share her talents. She has journeyed to Argentina, Mexico, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, London and Thailand setting choreography, teaching workshops, and giving master classes. In addition, Emily has been a faculty member with multiple touring conventions, traveling across the U.S. instructing, creating works, and adjudicating. Through her versatile experiences in all aspects of the dance industry, Emily has developed a great passion for teaching, creation and choreography.

JAMES JIANG
Originally from Guangzhou, China, James Jiang did not discover his passion for dance until after moving to the United States in 1999. At the age of 19, he fell in love with ballroom dance and began his training in Charleston, SC, under the direction of Tatiana Kazakova and Max Kozhevnikov. Over his 15 years of dance experience, James has won many local and national International Latin championships (Heritage, Atlanta Open, Ohio Star Ball) to name a few. After he retired from competitions, he is now focusing on teaching & sharing his knowledge locally in Charleston Area. He is specialized in Ballroom dancing in both International and American style. He taught locally at the former Elite Ballroom International studio and currently teaches at Ballroom Dance Club Charleston and Holy City Salsa. James has participated in the local Dancing with the ARK Stars as a professional over the last 4 years, winning the crown in 2016 and 2020 with his stars and coming in as 1st runner up in 2015. As an instructor for over 10 years, James is known for his attention to detail and technique and sharing his love of dance with students of all levels. In his spare time, James enjoys spending time with his wife and two beautiful children London and Liam.

MICHAEL HALL
Michael Hall is a New York Based dancer who began his training in his hometown of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina under the direction of Debbie Stringfield. He would eventually transition his training to Columbia City Jazz under the direction of Dale Lam at age 15. He then became the 2015 Male Best Dancer at The Dance Awards Las Vegas. After graduating High School Michael continued to pursue his Career in Dancing and found himself onboard Royal Caribbean's Cruise Line in "Saturday Night Fever the Musical". He spent time in Cairo, Egypt dancing in a new television show starring Sherihan. (Famous Actress/Singer in the Middle East.) Michael’s latest work was being part of The West Side Story cast in Tokyo!

ELISSA EDWARDS
Elissa Edwards is originally from Philadelphia but has traveled her entire life. Training all over the country as she grew up, she eventually settled in Wilmington, North Carolina, where she co-owned Impulse Dance Project, a pre-professional training company with her wife, Lindsey Bryant, for 8 years before moving to Raleigh, where she is now a full time staff member at CC & Company Dance Complex. There Elissa is the Director of the PrePro Program and the Contemporary Department Head as well as resident choreographer. Elissa also travels, teaching master classes and setting choreography on many studios across the nation and Canada. Elissa attended the University of the Arts on a full talent scholarship. She was also invited to perform for Stiletto entertainment and Anheiser Busch theme parks. In 2013, Elissa produced and directed her first full-length show, entitled “and in our willingness…” She was also a 3 time finalist in the Capezio A.C.E awards and was chosen as one out of 3 emerging choreographers to premiere her work at the North Carolina Dance Festival’s bonus day in January 2014. Elissa’s unique approach to each class helps students become more aware of their bodies while also finding their voice.

TOM RICHARDSON
Tom Richardson is a sought after choreographer and instructor based in New York City. Tom began his training as a dancer, singer and actor; a well-rounded triple threat and began working professionally at a young age. Working across 3 continents by the time he was 22. Tom appeared in the US national tour of Broadway’s SWING! (swing/lead vocal understudy), TraumNovela in the European Premiere in Spain (Ecco), Falco, a new multimedia musical in Vienna, Austria based on the late 80's pop star, Joseph and the amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, Gypsy, West Side Story and Alice through the looking glass, Cinderella to name a few.

Tom has danced for Kym Mazelle, as well as Industrials for Joop Perfume, Mission Australia, Coca Cola and has appeared in Tv commercials and film. Movement coach/choreographer for the 2017 Hausach (German fashion house) couture collection campaign for both print and video. Tom was selected as one of the 2018 Capezio A.C.E Award (A Choreographer Excellence) Finalist from choreographers around the world. He was assistant choreographer to Shelly Masenior for So You Think You Can Dance - Ukraine, additionally helping her set pieces in NYC.

For three years in a row, Tom was invited to present choreography to perform at D.RA. Dancin' Downtown at the Joyce Theater NYC. Other choreography credits include Dance: In It For Life (Off-Broadway), NDA/NCA Varsity Collegiate national championship, Midnight on Broadway for CCL, La Companyia XII International (Spain) The Winged Ones (Creative Team- Australia), TraumNovela an adaption of Stanley Kubrick's novel Eyes wide shut (Associate Choreographer, Spain). No LiMiTs off-off Broadway fund raiser. Choreographer on “BDC moves” video series.

Tom has taught master classes at dance companies, professional dance studios, competition studios, conventions and set choreography all over the world including the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe and Asia. He is resident faculty with Artistic Dance Exchange Touring the US, Canada and Europe. Special Guest at TDR - The Dance Revolution (Mexico) He was also a faculty member at Intrigue Dance Intensive and has been a Guest Faculty with The Pulse on Tour. He has taught/judged for Shine Dance (Canada) and has judged for multiple dance competitions in the US, Canada and Australia.

Tom is a Faculty member at world renowned Broadway Dance Center (NYC), as well as guest teaches at Steps on Broadway (New York City) Edge Performing arts Center (Los Angeles) The Underground Dance Centre (Toronto, Canada) and Urban Dance Centre in Sydney, Australia. Tom, has been featured in Dance Teacher Magazine Online, Danceplug, Dance.com (US), SYTYCDISM, Articles (Canada), and Intrigue Dance Intensive interview series and recently named a choreographer in the Top 6 concept videos to watch - Dance Spirit Magazine. Tom has received multiple awards for his choreography at many National and international competitions and is known for inspiring and challenging dancers, not just to be a well-trained dancer but to be a creative artist and true performer.

DALE LAM
Dale was named "Top Private Studio/Conservatory Teacher" by Dance Teacher magazine and The Dance Teacher Summit in Longbeach, California! She is an active choreographer and master instructor throughout the United States and has taught internationally at the Kiradjiev Cultural Center in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Danz Studio in Costa Rica, and the Singapore Dance Association at Lasalle College of the Arts in Singapore.

RYAN KIRBY
Ryan Kirby began dancing at the age of 6, training until he graduated school in his hometown of Greenville, South Carolina. After graduation, he worked as a company director for Starz Artistic Performing Company. It was there that his choreography won numerous national first overalls and FDC awards. After directing for 2 years, Ryan decided to pursue his dream of dancing professionally and moved to Los Angeles, California. After moving, Ryan worked on Glee, toured the country with Macy's passport and on the 2015 Pentatonix tour, worked on a Toyota commercial, and on several music videos and industrials. He also taught at IDA (international dance academy) in Hollywood, Mather Dance Company, and EVOLVE dance intensives as faculty. Ryan returned to his home of Starz in 2018 and has been teaching and traveling since.

JAKEVIS THOMASON
Jakevis Thomason is from Greenville, South Carolina, and started his training at Dianne’s School of Dance. He is now a 2020 graduate from the University of Southern California and has achieved his BFA from the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance. At Kaufman, he trained under prestigious faculty in various dance forms, branching from both the concert and commercial dance scenes that have shaped him into what Kaufman calls a “hybrid artist.” In addition to Jakevis enjoying teaching and choreographing, he has become passionate about creative directing and sees himself bringing his unique style and ideas to the commercial, concert, Broadway, and studio scenes of dance. Jakevis has been commissioned to choreograph works that have debuted in Cabo San Jose, Mexico, Santa Barbara, California, and Traverse City, Michigan. He has assisted and worked closely with choreographer Frank Gatson, who was the creative director for musical artists such as; Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and Beyoncé. Through the mentorship of Gatson, Jakevis has gotten the opportunity to work and choreograph for artists such as Jussie Smollett and Brandy. Jakevis looks forward to performing and teaching as long as he can in his career and wants to one day choreograph and creative direct for musical artists on tour, broadway shows, dance companies, and eventually his own company to showcase his works.

CRYSTAL WELLMAN
Crystal is a North Carolina native who started her dance training at the School of Gaston Dance Theatre, under the direction of Pat Wall. She continued her training as a scholarship student with the Joffrey Ballet, Atlanta Ballet School/pre-professional program, The University of North Carolina School of the Arts and holds a BFA from East Carolina University where she was coached by Galina Panova. Professionally she has worked with the Montgomery Ballet, Oklahoma City Ballet, Charleston Ballet Theatre, Charleston Dance Project, The Moving Poets of Charlotte and Ballet Evolution.

Throughout her career she has performed a wide range of works, from featured and principal classical roles to contemporary ballets. Some of her most memorable performances include Giselle, Sugar Plum Fairy, The Cowgirl in Agnes DeMilles Rodeo, title role in Cinderella, the principle role in Balachine's Valse Fantasieand Gerald Arpino'sLight Rain. She has performed many world premiers most notably those created by Helen Pickett, Jessica Lang, Leewei Chao and Amy Seiwert. Wellman has choreographed her own professional ballets for Oklahoma City Ballet, Charleston Dance Project, as well as set contemporary pieces on professional students for YAGP.

EMILY DAIL
Emily Dail is about to enter her senior year at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City. Earning her BFA in dance, Emily has had the opportunity to perform in pieces with choreographers Peter Chu, Earl Mosley and Tami Stronach, along with several student work pieces. The most recent work performed was entitled, Divided Against by Peter Chu. Along with performing, Emily has studied under Elisabeth Motley, Catherine Cabeen, Karen Gayle, Jens Giersdorf, Elena Comendador and several other incredible professors. Emily has enjoyed taking advantage of the city by furthering her training and taking classes at Movement Research, Peridance, Broadway Dance Center and Steps on Broadway. In 2018, Emily performed work by Brice Mousset through an apprentince program in, A’Very Special night of Dance. Most recently Emily has attended the Trisha Brown Dance Company Winter Workshop and Bates Dance Festival Winter Workshop.

Growing up in Charleston, South Carolina and studying at Creative Edge Dance Center, Emily is ambitious to be back at her home studio, and be with so many people she adores and loves! After college, Emily hopes to perform in a company in NYC or in a company abroad, and share her love of dance! Theres nothing quite as special as being surrounded by people who are creative thinkers and know how important the arts are!
